What are the uses of grinding stones?
Abrasives are designed to remove scratches, blemishes, and irregularities from a stone's surface. They essentially work like sandpaper, but are much more durable and effective. They are manufactured using different abrasive minerals and bonding agents.
Main Types of Grinding Stone
Grinding stones are divided into different types based on the materials they contain and their intended use. The most common types you'll encounter online include:
Magnesite-Bound Grinding Wheels: These wheels use a binder called magnesite to bind abrasive particles (usually silicon carbide ) together . They are particularly effective for coarse grinding of soft stones such as marble and travertine. Magnesite provides consistent cutting power by exposing new, sharp surfaces as it wears.
Frankfurt Stones: These are abrasives with a specific geometric shape, typically used in automatic floor polishing machines. Available in both magnesite and resin-bonded versions, they are typically used for intermediate grinding and polishing stages.
Resin-Bonded Diamond Pads: These are modern and highly effective abrasives produced by combining synthetic diamond powder with a resin binder. They are typically in the form of discs or pads. They are preferred in the final stages to achieve a high gloss and mirror finish. They are ideal for very hard stones such as granite.
Patinato Brushes: While not technically a "stone," these are used for polishing and texturing. Patinato brushes are designed to give the stone's surface a brushed or antiqued texture. The abrasive particles (silicon carbide or diamond) they contain abrade the softer parts of the stone, highlighting its natural grain and character.
How is the deletion process performed?
Polishing is generally a gradual process, starting with coarser grit (lower grit) stones and gradually progressing to finer grit stones.
Coarse Polishing: Deep scratches, stains and unevenness on the surface are removed using low grit stones such as 36, 60 or 80.
Medium Grinding: The surface is smoothed with medium grit stones such as 120, 220, 400.
